For more than 10 years, I've taught college composition, and year after year I saw the same need: students arriving in my classroom without the writing skills or confidence they needed to succeed. I began slowing down, going back to the basics, and teaching more of what students were expected to know but had never actually been taught. Eventually, that work became The Write Road — a complete Composition curriculum designed to prepare college-bound high school students for the writing they'll be expected to do in college.

I believe writing is how we come to know ourselves. Whether I'm teaching a student how to build a strong argument, helping a writer find her voice, or writing about my own experiences, I'm interested in the same thing: helping people put what matters into words.

I'm also the author of A River Runs Through Us: What Remains After Life Breaks Open, its companion journal Write the River, and the children's book Skeleton Street, part of the Pink House Adventures series.
